In this introductory blog post, I'll give you a glimpse into the captivating world of textile art and provide an overview of the range of skills involved in creating magnificent multimedia textile art products. So, let's unravel the threads of imagination and dive into the captivating world of Incriminate.

Textile Art: Where Imagination Meets Craftsmanship

Textile art, as the name suggests, is a form of art that merges the beauty of fabric, yarn, and other textile materials with creative vision and technical skills. It's a medium that transcends traditional artistic boundaries and allows artists to transform ordinary fabrics into something new and exciting.

I think we should be pushing boundaries by exploring what happens when you mix things up, including painting, embroidery, quilting, mixed media, and digital techniques. Over the years I've been tried all sorts of techniques and I love using different things together - just to see what happens.

What sort of skills are involved?

Well, a mix of things from getting the first germ of an idea through to planning how you're going to create a piece. Let's take a sneak peek at some of the key skills involved:

Design and Concept Development
Every textile art creation begins with a concept. I love playing with ideas that translate abstract ideas into tangible designs. I doodle and quite a few ideas coming from just a pen and a scrap of paper.
Fabric Selection and Preparation:
I probably have more textiles than I can use however it makes it much more fun when you come to design things if you have a handy choice! Choosing the right fabrics is crucial to achieve the right texture, colour, and durability. Thinking of where your project will end up and how it will be used will affect the materials you select.
Painting and Surface Design:
Incorporating painting techniques adds depth and dimension to textile art. I play with colours and textures, using brushstrokes and fabric dyes to create captivating visual narratives. I have a big (always room for more!) selection of coloured pencils and use those to draw on fabric. I have some new ones I particularly like - Derwent Inktense pencils - which turn to something like watercolour when you wet them (or your drawing) but dry as permanent ink. No going back but also no worry of losing the colours.
Embroidery and Needlework:
I've been studying hand embroidery with The School of Stitched Textiles and this has introduced me to loads more techniques including goldwork. This was something I really knew little about until I had to do it as part of my course. intricate art of goldwork embroidery and needlework can bring a textile creation to life. I use a variety of stitching techniques, such as satin stitch, chain stitch, and beadwork, to embellish and enhance the artistic elements and I'm always on the lookout for new ideas.
Quilting and Appliqué:
Quilting involves stitching multiple layers of fabric together, while appliqué adds additional decorative elements. This is another topic that I was introduced to in my course and now I love adding fabric and texture as this can contribute to the tactile richness of textile art, creating dynamic compositions and patterns.
